Psychotherapy

IPNAM Health LLC, An integrative psychiatry practice.

Compassion toward the self and others is at the heart of all treatment with IPNAM Health.  Once the psychiatric evaluation is complete we consider together which therapy option(s) may be right for you.  More than one approach may be used over time.

For those already in treatment with a therapist, understanding where you are in your therapy process and issues affecting your daily life informs medication recommendations and is part of all treatment sessions.

A few examples of therapeutic approaches

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) considers the interconnectedness between our thoughts, feelings and actions.  Positive change in one may have robust benefits in the other two.  CBT for conditions like depression and anxiety may be comparable to what is achieved with medication.  CBT for insomnia is now established as a first-line treatment.  CBT is a more structured type of therapy and may include activities to do between sessions. Other related therapies like Behavioral Activation may be applied in this process as well.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy engages elements of behavioral therapies and mindfulness practice.  As the name suggests, the focus is on accepting emotions as they arise rather than becoming entangled in rejection, denial or dismissal.  From this starting point we commit to positive changes that align with your personal values.  Opportunities to stay present focused, to be curious with nonjudgmental observations, and to adjust responses to hardships as they arise are explored.

  • Insight-oriented therapy

Insight-oriented therapy is a less structured treatment that explores ways our life experiences may affect us in the present.  We may consider how our unconscious mind influences our reactions in daily life, bringing these forces into our awareness.  Weekly or twice-weekly sessions are recommended with this approach  While there are similarities, insight-oriented therapy is not the same as psychoanalysis, a more intensive process.  â€‹

  • Trauma-informed therapy

The impact of trauma in our present lives and between generations is understood more every day.  Neglect, emotional, physical and sexual abuse may begin in the early years of childhood.  Illness, injury and violence may change the direction of our lives immeasurably.  Racism and prejudice based on ethnicity, religion, gender expression or sexual identity are pervasive.  With a trauma-informed lens we may consider how layers of stress, influence thoughts about yourself, your sense of self-worth and future expectations, personal and professional relationships, and your physical health.  Safety, compassion and empathy are the foundation of this process.
